Frequently Asked Questions

Questions you might have about the Feed Smart automatic pasture feeder

How much feed does the 1000 lb. hopper hold?

It varies, depending on the size and weight of the feed pellets. Example: 18 or more bags of Strategy will fit in the hopper, but with a larger size feed pellet, the number of bags will be less.

Does the hopper keep feed safe from the weather?

Absolutely. We have tested the feeder in all types of weather, and it has never allowed ANY moisture to get inside, and affect the feed. The weather has thrown some wicked rain, with 60-70 mph winds at it, but it hasn't let us down.

Can the horses turn the feeder over and get to the feed?

We have had tested it in several diffrent pasture situations, and so far, no horse has tried. Since it weighs over 300 lbs., empty, it's unlikely a horse would tip it over, unless it was tied to the feeder. We do recommend you put an auger-style tiedown in the ground under the feeder and fasten it to the center of the cross-brace beneath the feed trough. This will protect the feeder from both horses and extreme winds, as well.

What is the useful life of the feeder?

We constructed the feeder of heavy-duty, galvanized steel. With only one moving part, the motor, we believe 5-10 yrs. wouldn't be out of the question.

What happens if there is no sunlight to charge the battery?

The system has a 12 Volt, solar-powered battery. During our almost 2 years of testing, we have experienced up to seven consecutive days of rainy, overcast skies, with no lapse in service.

How well does the feed hopper preserve the feed's freshness?

Since the hopper is moisture-proof, it keeps the feed fresher than when stored in bags. The feed is constantly moving in the hopper while feeding, creating air circulation around the feed as it's dispensed.
