Healthy, Happy Horses – With Feed Smart
Just because you put a bunch of feed into a horse, doesn’t mean it’s going to actually get used to nourish his body. As a matter of fact, it can do more harm than good! That’s why we invented the Feed Smart automatic horse feeders. We saw, first-hand, how much harm feeding too much grain can do to a horse.
If you’ve been around horses much, you already know that a horse can eat a lot of feed at one time. But, how much of that feed will actually benefit the horse’s body? That is the answer that most people get wrong.
A Google search will turn up several educational web pages and all agree it’s best to feed horses several times a day in small, frequent, evenly spaced meals. A horse’s stomach is small in comparison to its body, and functions at its best when it is less than half-full. This is why the traditional method of feeding grain only once or twice daily is so deficient in benefitting the horse’s overall health.
Picture your horses out there in the pasture, grazing a good bit of the time. Their stomachs almost always have something in them. Let’s say that an hour before feeding time, they ate from their round bale for about 15 minutes. So, when it came time to eat their evening grain, their stomachs were already at close to half capacity. They’re not going to turn down their grain, so they eat that too, and now their stomachs are at close to 80% capacity.
A horse’s stomach automatically begins to empty out as soon as it gets two-thirds full, whether the food has been processed or not. Well, there goes your grain, dumping into the small intestine before it’s even broken down. You can imagine the possible consequences of introducing unprocessed grain into the horse’s intestinal tract.
The Feed Smart feeders are safe and reliable tools to feed your horses, in a way that’s much better for their health & well-being. When your horses are fed the Feed Smart way [four small meals each day] they will require up to 25% less feed to maintain a healthy weight. The risk of grain-related illnesses like colic and founder will be greatly reduced, as well.
We put the first prototype Feed Smart feeders in operation in the spring of 2008, feeding four daily meals to our personal horses. From then to now, we have had NO colic episodes at our farm. I can’t imagine going back to feeding only twice a day.
